The Salseando! Experience

A concept unique to the intersectionality of my love of Latin dance and leadership development, the Salseando! experience is a leadership and team development session like no other.

How did it all start?

This started as a thought while dancing in class. I saw the way in which my instructor was talking about social dancing and everything that needed to go into a fun time while at a social, and it made me think about leadership of a person.

See, in social dancing, there are layers to make it a good or fun experience for both Lead and Follow. The Lead has to connect to the music, determine the skill level of the Follow, and then ensure the Follow is able to execute all of the moves the Lead wants to do during this song.

The Follow, in turn (see what I did there?), has to also connect to the music, connect to the Lead, and respond or execute what the Lead is signaling to do. Hopefully, the interpretation is correct.

In any (working) relationship, there is a give and take. The supervisor (Lead), has to determine what their subordinate (Follow) can do and at what skill level. The supervisor also has to be able to communicate or signal to the subordinate what the next step will be.

First Session

There is so much to this analogy! and I was able to go into much more of it at my first session of this idea! I had some amazing people show up and really engage in the session and how they were able to connect to the concepts of dancing and leading. We had amazing conversation and interactions, I was blown away with it all. At the end, we knew we needed more time. We had to cut the conversation short because we ran out of time in the studio but we will have another!

I can’t wait to do this again and highlight this analogy for others, it really is a perfect pairing of ideas.

Till next time,

JMG
